“It’s déjà vu all over again” to quote former New York Yankee great Yogi Berra. I am honored that the members of GAHPERD have entrusted me to lead this organization again.
First, I would like to thank the entire GAHPERD Executive Board and our Convention Committee for all their hard work in executing the 2016 Convention in Savannah. Without their efforts, the Convention could not happen.
I am thrilled to have our 2017 Convention at The Classic Center in Athens, GA next October 8-10. Convention Director Babs Greene and our Executive Board will put together another outstanding program for our members. We look forward to seeing the state’s health and physical education teachers descend on Athens for the first time since 2004. Our theme is "Find Your Greatness". My sincere hope is that GAHPERD can be the conduit for you to find your professional greatness in the classroom. To discover more about finding your greatness, click here!
It is an exciting time for our organization and our profession as we stand on the precipice of the release of Georgia’s ESSA implementation plan. With the addition of health and physical education to a child’s well-rounded education, our K-12 teachers have the potential to positively impact children across our state like never before. However, we all still need to remain vigilant as advocates for our profession, programs, and students as we move into this new era. GAHPERD will be sure to remain active with advocating for you.
Thank you for being a member of GAHPERD and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.

It is a great time to be a Physical Educator in Georgia! We are in a time of great change and excitement attracting all kinds of attention from the other 49 states for the work that we are doing in Physical Education. So many of you have spent countless hours both in testing and recording scores for the Fitnessgram Test. You may have felt that it was a task that went unnoticed and was unappreciated. It was noticed and it is appreciated as it helped to boost Georgia to the top of the list for the entire nation!
“As a part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) recognized Georgia as the first state to fully implement the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP). Fueled by the success of the Georgia SHAPE initiative, the state’s efforts to support student physical fitness exemplifies the model of fitness education encouraged by the President’s Council. “We commend Georgia officials for their leadership and commitment to helping Georgia students lead an active lifestyle,” said PCFSN Executive Director Shellie Pfohl. “The Presidential Youth Fitness Program and the opportunities provided through initiatives like Georgia SHAPE offer our nation’s young people the early, positive experiences they need to adopt healthy habits that can last a lifetime,” added Pfohl. “Parents of Georgia’s public school students can rest assured their children are learning about their personal health and fitness from physical educators trained to deliver a quality fitness assessment and education experience,” said Therese McGuire, Georgia Department of Education’s health and physical education program specialist.”
Keep up the good work! Let us know how we can meet your needs! We hope to see you in January at our Share the Wealth Physical Education Conference. It has been described as the best physical education workshop in the country and draws attendees from all across the U. S. and beyond. As the thirteen southern states come together in Atlanta this February, we hope that your will join us for the combined SHAPE-Southern District/GAHPERD Convention. Help us grow and improve! We need you! Stay involved….share your wisdom….and ask for help when you need us! That’s what we’re here for! With your input we move forward! Let’s keep Georgia on the top of the list!

Kim Thompson - GAHPERD Executive Director

As I reflect on this incredible year, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. It has been such an honor and priviledge to serve as your president and to represent Georgia AHPERD at various meetings and conferences this past year. I continue to be so proud of our organization and our profession. I am very grateful for a dedicated Executive Board of Directors who worked tirelessly on your behalf all year. It was an honor to serve with these incredible colleagues who are fantastic leaders and very dedicated to keeping our organization strong. Under the superb leadership of our executive director, Kim Thompson, and our current President, Brian Devore, Georgia AHPERD’s executive committee and board continues to work very hard on our behalf to achieve our goals.
Thank you for putting your faith in us and providing us with this opportunity to serve. Thank you for allowing me the great privilege of serving as your president this past year. It’s been one of the most satisfying professional endeavors of my life!
Yours in health,
Bridgette Stewart
GAHPERD Past President

It is a privilege to serve as GAHPERD’s President Elect! I look forward to working with and learning from the other board members as well as my fellow educators. I want to take this opportunity to challenge all of us to join together to make our association a positive team that
• Advocates for quality health and physical education for all of Georgia’s children.
• Promotes and provides professional growth opportunities for teachers.
• Leads by example, as we enjoy physical activity in our daily lives.
My hope is that we become contagious….that each GAHPERD member is so excited about our mission that other teachers and health professionals can’t help but catch that enthusiasm! When this happens, we will make a difference in the health of all Georgians.
