4th Annual Southern Obesity Summit

The 4th Annual Southern Obesity Summit takes place in Atlanta, Georgia from September 12-14.  This innovative conference will focus on childhood and adult obesity prevention in the southern United States, the most obese region in the nation.  Teams from 16 southern states, comprising more than 300 participants will convene to promote cross-sector collaboration and partnerships to prevent obesity, share successful policy and community-based intervention strategies, and connect with peer practitioners and leaders to promote, coordinate, and sustain innovative obesity prevention activities.

Leadership Development Conference in DC

Stephanye Peek's notes:  The 55th AAHPERD Leadership Development Conference was held on June 16-19, 2010 at Washington Court Hotel in Washington, D.C. Our GAHPERD representatives that were honored to attend the conference were David Worrall, President-Elect; Gina Zuganelis, Vice President-Health and Advocacy; Jacque Harbison, Executive Director and Stephanye Peek, President.

As physical education and health professionals, it is important that we take a hard look at the candidates that were elected in the Georgia Primaries;  to see if and how they support our profession.

Gina Zuganelis, one of our GAHPERD Advocacy Coordinators, has contacted the primary winners to ask them how they support  physical education and health in Georgia. Highlights from the GAHPERD Southwest District Workshop

The event took place on July 17 & 18 and was sponsored by Albany State University HPER and GAHPERD. The session leaders included ASU faculty and master teachers from Dougherty, Lee, Mitchell and Cobb counties. The workshop included programs such as standards-based instruction in health & physical education, the implications of PECAT/HECAT and Fitnessgram in Physical Education, training information in strength & conditioning and current health related topics, fitness oriented rhythms and games, re-certification/certification in CPR/AED and much more! The workshop was organized by our own Southwest District Rep, LaTonya Conner.

    I hope you are staying cool in this hot summertime in Georgia and have been able to participate in some of your favorite activities and events this summer - like biking, running, swimming, camping, skiing, hiking, and more! But now it's time to get ready for our Fall Convention in Savannah, so mark your calendar for Oct. 31 - Nov. 2 and get ready for our theme of "Fitness is IN, 2010.  Get fit.  Stay fit.  Fit for Life!"

Shape of the Nation Report

The 2010 Shape of the Nation Report:Status of Physical Education in the USA provides a current picture of physical education (PE) in the American education system. Incremental improvements have been made in the last few years in the number of states that now require PE (17% increase) and student assessment in PE (26% increase). However, the Report shows that more states now allow waivers and exemptions from PE classes (77% increase) and no progress has been made in providing daily physical education in all grades K-12.
